Man shares story after injury from fireworks
MIAMI (WSVN) -- South Floridians are set to celebrate Independence Day, but one man is sharing his story after he was seriously injured by fireworks.
Two years ago, 43-year-old Angelo Anzalone was celebrating the 4th of July like he always did since his he was little. "I really wasn't paying enough attention, including safety. We've always been a little reckless but not thinking anything like this was possible," said Anzalone.
"I was lighting off mortars, which are the ones that you drop in the tub, and I guess there was one that still had a piece of paper that was hot, dropped the next one in and just instantly ignited and shot out and hit me right in the face," said Anzalone. He would loose an eye, among other injuries.
Stories like Anzalone are becoming too common for Dr. Christopher Brooks. He said injuries like Anzalone happen every year. "Fireworks end up exploding where people don't want them, usually in the hands," said Brooks, "so about half of the injuries are actually hand injuries. The third are around the face and half of those actually injure eyes."
For most people, the colorful sparkle doesn't instantly spark a sense of danger, but it can cause serious consequences. "My eye. Shattered my cheekbone. Broke my nose. Broke my jaw, and of course you can see all the scars," said Anzalone.
After loosing his eye and undergoing several surgeries, Anzalone said he thinks he is ready to give it another try this year. "I think safety is the most important thing. I've been more careful. I've been more cautious," he said.
Dr. Brooks said it is always better to be safe than sorry. "If they do want to watch fireworks, which many of us do, you can go to a professional display and let the professionals take the risk and put on a better show," said Brooks.
Dr. Brooks said, if you get hurt with a firework, immediately call 911. If you are bleeding, apply pressure to the affected area. If you burn yourself, apply cool water.
