Paper delivery man finds wandering child, mother charged
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police said a South Florida woman is facing charges after a newspaper delivery man discovered her son wandering in the street early Wednesday morning.
Investigators said the 3-year-old boy was outside by himself at around 4 a.m. Witnesses said he was seen on West Flagler Street near Southwest 33rd Avenue.
That is when the paper delivery man notified police. "I knocked on a nearby door, and the person at the home did not know the child, so I called police," said Carlos.
Authorities said Janisleidy Herbello, 24, told detectives she left her son sleeping at 1 a.m. and went to a friend's house. "Post Miranda Rights, she admits that she had left the child sleeping alone to go to a friend's house just to party, to drink and do drugs," said Miami Police Detective Willie Moreno.
Another man witnessed the lost child. "I hope everything is OK with the child. The child, he was fine. The only thing, he was like disoriented," said David Obregon.
Herbello returned at 5 a.m. to find police outside her home and authorities said she seemed surprised to see them. "Apparently, she didn't see much of an issue leaving her child sleeping obviously, this is something of great concern," said Moreno. "The child did get out of the house, wandered into the busy street, and yes, it is a safety issue."
Herbello told police a friend picked her up at 1 a.m. and they drove 45 minutes to a friend's house to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana.
Herbello has been arrested and charged with child neglect.
Just before noon, the 3-year-old and his father where seen walking out of the police department and into the Department of Children and Families building. A custody hearing has been scheduled for Thursday to determine under whose care the child will be placed under.
