Man caught on camera stealing UPS package
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Surveillance cameras outside a South Miami home captured a crook stealing a package from a residence just moments after it had been delivered.
The video shows a UPS employee delivering packages near the 5900 block of Twin Lakes Drive in South Miami on June 27. Minutes later, a man drives up in a truck, picks up the two boxes, puts it in his vehicle and drives off. Inside the box was about $300 worth of party supplies a woman was having delivered for her children.
South Miami Police Major Rene Landa explained, "Apparently, this gentleman with this company truck is driving through the residence, observes the UPS truck making a delivery of two boxes at this particular location in South Miami. Once the UPS truck made the delivery and drove off, this gentleman went up and down the street, it appears, just checking out if anybody was in the area, walked out of his truck and grabbed the two boxes that were left there."
According to officials, the man's vehicle had the information of an awning company printed on the side of truck. Police called the phone number and asked the man to come into the police station. They then arrested 23-year-old Carlos Chaviano Gutierrez. "We have the gentleman that's in a work truck, he pulls up with the technology that we have in this era, with cameras in front of the house, with a sign that has the company and the phone number."
Gutierrez is currently under house arrest. "People are going around following trucks like these making deliveries," said Landa. "They don't know what's inside the boxes, so I'm sure if they would have told the guy, 'Listen, it's paper plates and stuff,' maybe he wouldn't have gone this far."
Police said the family was home at the time of the incident. The homeowner did not want to speak, but, police said, the video speaks a thousand words, as it led them directly to the person they were looking for.
