Tented NE Miami-Dade home fumigated, then burglarized
NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The termites were gone, but so was her TV.
North Miami resident Gladys Barberan said she was not expecting to find her home burglarized after she had it tented to try to get rid of the pests. "All the drawers were open; all this was on the floor," she said as she pointed to her belongings scattered around a bedroom.
When she returned to her home Friday, Barberan quickly realized more than just bugs had been inside. "When I went to the back, [I noticed] they ripped the tent by my window, but they did not enter through [that] window; they went straight to my son's window," she said.
On top of this mess, the thieves stole a TV set.
Barberan admitted it could have been worse. "It wasn't that much," she said. "I took my personal stuff to my friend's house because I lived over at my friend's house."
The residential burglary is the second such hit to a home in Barberan's neighborhood. Another tented home located blocks away was targeted earlier in July.
Police warned this is an especially dangerous crime. "These chemicals being pumped through these houses are not for human consumption," a police spokesperson said.
Detectives have visited Barberan's home. She said she plans to take matters further. "We need to go see the commissioner and go to the police department, and that's it. We plan to do that," she said.
