DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officials have confiscated two malnourished horses in Southwest Ranches after receiving calls from concerned citizens, Monday.
"No. I've never picked one up this bad. It's tough to get them back. It would be a least 30 days to find out if she's gonna make it or not," said Peaceful Ridge Rescue's Victor Cutino.
Police found two horses starving to death on their owner's property in Southwest Ranches.
One of the horses is named Lucky, as in lucky to be alive. She is under weight, her bones are sticking out and her ribs are visible. Cutino said, "The stomach, as you can see is all caved in."
Caretakers said Lucky has been living on such little food for song long, her system may not be able to recover even now that she has begun eating. "We rate the horses from 0 to 5," said Cutino, "five being the best. They're nice, fat and healthy. Four is OK. She is a 0."
It is believed that the horses have not been feed in about three or four months. According to the horses' owner, he could no longer care for them. "Right now, because it's under investigation, I can't comment on what the owner said or any information about how the horses came to be this way," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokesperson Dani Moschella.
The horses were turned over to Peaceful Ridge Rescue in Davie. The organization has stepped forward to care for them. "We always tell people, don't let it get to this point. If you need to do something with your horse, if you can't sell it, that's fine, give it away," said Cutino.
Peaceful Ridge Rescue has saved 20 horses and five have been adopted. Courtney fell in love with a horse and adopted the horse that once raced at Calder Race track. She said, "It breaks my heart to see that, that they can honestly do this to an animal, to any animal," she noted when asked what she felt about the horses that were found unfed.
The BSO detectives are investigating the matter, and so far the horses' owners have not been charged.
