Officer injured in crash that left 2 injured, 1 dead
DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- One person has died and three others, including a police officer, had to be hospitalized after a violent accident.
Davie Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene at the 4800 block of Davie Road at around 4 p.m. Friday.
According to Davie Police, the police officer was attempting a traffic stop on a vehicle driving northbound on Davie Road from the area of Stirling Road. The vehicle failed to stop and a second officer, who was driving southbound on Davie Road, tried to assist.
The officer was struck by the vehicle that originally failed to stop. Three occupants were in that vehicle. The 16-year-old driver of the blue Toyota Corolla was declared dead on the scene.
A 7News viewer captured the whole scene on his cell phone. In the video, you see one car in smoke, and the police officer lying on the ground, as paramedics rushed to his side. "It was a horrendous crash," said Pastor Mike Greene.
According to investigators, the injured officer responded to help stop the vehicle who refused to stop for the other officer. Christian Vargas said he witnessed the crash. "The cop car just turned on the lights, and he was speeding, and she got scared because I don't know how he got to this side of the road, but I think she was going to be a U-turn or something, but he hit her, and the impact of the car made her flip."
Greene rushed to the scene after hearing the collision. "Obviously, there were people hurt. The police officer was lying on the ground," he said.
The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was removed from his cruiser and was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
The two civilians removed from the other vehicle involved were also transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, but they suffered critical injuries. They remained in critical condition on the following day.
Officers gathered at the hospital to show their support for their injured colleague. The officers condition remains unknown at this time.
David Police continue to analyze evidence from the crash site and continue to investigate. They would not comment on the crash.
