Miami Lakes vice mayor takes office after mayor charged
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) -- A new mayor is taking the reigns in Miami Lakes in the wake of a corruption scandal.
Former Vice Mayor, Caesar Mestre was introduced at a special council meeting on Thursday afternoon, as the city's new leader.
Mestre addressed the allegations facing the suspended mayor. "I never considered money a driving force for Michael Pizzi. I'm very surprised about that. He lived a very simple life. Never was into fancy cars, fancy house," said Mestre.
Both Pizzi and Sweetwater Mayor Manuel Morono were arrested on extortion charges on Tuesday.
They stand accused of establishing fake companies, then receiving thousands of dollars in federal grant money.
