Big Mama collects back-to-school supplies for students
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida philanthropist known for helping the less fortunate needs the public's help to get kids ready for the school year.
Essie "Big Mama" Reed is at it again. She visited Park Avenue Gymnastics in Cooper City on a quest.
She was given book bags and school supplies towards her goal of preparing 10,000 needy children for school. "All the kids have been collecting since June 1, and these are all the backpacks and school supplies that we collected for Big Mama," said Caroline Jurgray of Park Avenue Gymnastics.
"It's very helpful to give other kids something they need," said a little girl.
"There is children involved giving back to other children they don't even know anything about, and that makes my day," said Big Mama.
Big Mama will hand out back-to-school supplies in Broward County on Aug. 16 at Central Broward Regional Park. In Miami-Dade County in Hialeah, she will be off the Palmetto Expressway and 122nd Street at the Miami Shoe Outlet.
"You have four kids, come in with the four kids, and I will give you four backpacks. That's no problem," said Miami Shoe Outlet employee David Semel.
