Slain tow truck driver remembered as brave, selfless
PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- Dozens of family, friends and coworkers gathered Sunday to pay tribute to David Herr, the tow truck driver who was allegedly shot and killed by the owner of a car the victim was removing from a parking garage.
A procession that included dozens of tow trucks from Florida and Georgia made its way along Broward Boulevard from a mortuary to Duck Pond at 5700 Peters Road in Plantation. "These are all people that loved him dearly," said Kelly Knecht, Herr's fiancée. "I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him."
Herr, 36, was shot to death Tuesday afternoon by Triston Johnson at the St. Croix Apartment in Lauderdale Lakes. According to police, Herr had been called to tow away cars that had been parked there illegally. As he was removing Johnson's Jaguar, Johnson confronted him and then pulled out his gun.
911 dispatcher: "911. What is your emergency?"
Caller 1: "Someone just got shot. A guy was towing cars, and they shot him."
Caller 2: "Hey, this man here is dying. Oh, my God!"
Knecht said her fiancé faced dangerous situations on a regular basis. "He's had many guns to his face, knives pulled on him," she said. "He had a guy one day-- he was by himself-- took him down and beat the hell right out of him. David loved what he did. He didn't think anybody would seriously take his life over a car."
When Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the apartment complex, Johnson allegedly started shooting at Deputy Michael Ryan. The law enforcer shot back, hospitalizing Johnson, who is expected to recover.
Knecht remembered Herr as a kind, giving man. "This is a man who would give the shirt off his back," she said. "He loved his friends. They called, he was there at any time."
Herr's fiancée singled out Johnson's actions after he shot him for the first time. "He went and put a gunshot in the back of his head; already dead, you put two more into his heart. That was unnecessary. He wanted to kill him. He needs to pay for what he did."
Herr's family and friends set up a memorial fund in his name. Donations will go to the two children he left behind. For more information, log on to https://secure.giveforward.com/donate/85043/.
