Woman killed in deputy-involved shooting
COOPER CITY, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office said they were forced to fire on a woman they described as armed and dangerous.
"We're pretty much in shock," neighbor Jennifer Angelson said. "It's an uproar in the community."
Lisa Taylor was outside her home waiting for deputies, sitting in a lounge chair, according to neighbors. Neighbors also said Taylor began to become mentally unstable after her son moved out earlier this year.
"Shortly after 9 a.m. this morning, a 44-year-old female called our dispatch from her home, she said she was armed with a gun, and she was gonna kill anybody and everybody," said Broward Sheriff Scott Israel.
A family friend recalls Taylor showing signs of mental instability. "She was always nervous," Nick Zorovich said. "She had, I think, she had some mental health issues."
Sheriff Israel described the scene after deputies arrived. "One sergeant and three deputies encountered her at the intersection of Fir Way and East Sailboat. The deputies continually shouted to her, 'Drop the weapon, drop the weapon, drop the weapon,' she pointed the weapon at our deputies, our deputies fired." Israel also noted that this may have been a case of suicide by cop.
A vehicle where a man was sitting behind the wheel was caught in the crossfire. He was not injured.
"It's a good thing he did not have a passenger," Kathryn Mulhall, a neighbor said. "The passenger would have not made it."
Deputies have not identified the weapon used by the woman.
According to reports, the woman was Baker Acted back in 2011. It is unclear if Taylor had a criminal record.
Neighbors and friends of Taylor's son were shocked to hear of the extent of the incident. "She owned a gun," Zorovich said. "I never thought she would do that though."
"I would never picture her to do that," Chris Garofolo said. "It's kind of extreme."
BSO continues to investigate.
