Officer charged with DUI after hit-and-run crash
DORAL, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida police officer has been arrested and charged after he allegedly left the scene of an accident over the weekend.
Thirty-five-year-old Larry Laverde was arrested and has been suspended with pay as he awaits the results of an ongoing investigation.
According to police, Laverde was off-duty when he crashed into a car while driving his police cruiser along Southwest 127th Avenue and Miller Drive, at around 2:30 a.m., Sunday.
According to the arrest report, Laverde fled the scene after the crash without rendering aid to the crash victims. Laverde then went home and called a friend to tell him about what had occurred. The friend immediately called police and told them what Laverde had confessed to him.
Police arrested Laverde at his home after he failed a sobriety test.
The victim of the crash said he was shocked by the officer's actions. "It's something crazy. It's something crazy. He is completely 100 percent responsible ... he could have killed me," said Fernando Monch. "I'm alive because I don't know, thanks God. I'm supposed to be protected by police not the police do that to me and they disappear."
Witness Michael Murphy said, "The Mazda just went spinning out, and the cop car just kept on going it. Man, he was going fast."
Laverde is a 7-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department. He has been charged with DUI and fleeing the scene of a traffic crash.
MDPD has not released Laverde's mug shot due to the ongoing investigation.
