Fatal crash shuts down Biscayne Blvd.
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A deadly car accident on Biscayne Boulevard during the morning commute has closed the roadway.
The crash happened on Northeast 14th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, early Wednesday morning, before dawn.
Officials said two women driving a Smart car ran a red light and hit a pickup truck. The driver of the Smart car was trapped and knocked unconscious, but crews managed to free her and transport her to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The passenger died on the scene.
Paramedics also rushed the driver of the pickup truck, who was knocked out by the impact, to the hospital in critical condition.
One witness described the scene prior to the accident. "The pickup was going eastbound on 15th Street," Daniel Tyree said. "He had a green light. The little car here had a red light on Biscayne Boulevard, ran the red light and T-boned the truck."
Miami Beach Police officer Kenia Reyes released a statement after the accident was cleared. "As of right now, detectives believe the person behind the wheel of that Smart car may have been impaired," Reyes said.
Tyree continued to describe the incident. "Not going that fast, but it's one of those cars that can't stand the impact. It's a tragedy," Tyree said. "It's life-changing to see it this close."
Biscayne Boulevard was closed between 14th and 16th Streets in both directions for sometime, but traffic along Biscayne Boulevard has since reopened.
The cause of the fatal crash is under investigation, and police are awaiting toxicology results for the driver.
