Teen Tased by police laid to rest
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) -- On the day loved ones gathered to remember a teen who died after being tased by police, the wall, home to his graffiti, has been re-painted.
The building, located on the corner of 71st and Collins Avenue, was re-painted by the property manager early Wednesday morning.
"It's as if it never happened," said Miami Beach resident G.P. Welsh. "My thinking is, 'What are you going to do? Leave it there? You can't do that. Cover it up?' There's no happy ending."
Family and Friends of Israel Hernandez gathered to give their final farewell as he was laid to rest during a final prayer. His mother cried out loud in pain walking to the grave site of her 18-year-old son.
According to Hernandez' friends, they said police had celebrated over Hernandez's lifeless body once police subdued the teen with a Taser. "He was trying to do his job and place this young man under arrest," Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez said.
Since the death of Hernandez, supporters have gathered on the streets, angry over the actions of police. "There's no way out of the fact that a horrible tragedy has taken place," the witness said. "Life is going to move on."
For the Hernandez family, who moved to the U.S from Colombia, moving on is easier said than done. Friends said the teen's mother is emotionally stunned over her son's death. "She's very upset," Daniel Turbay, a family friend said. "That's all I can really say. A lot of tears, a lot of tears. It looks like something happened more then just the Taser."
Colombian officials have also joined the family to show their support, blaming police for using excessive force.
Miami Beach Police are still conducting an investigation into the incident. They are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results to conclude the investigation.
Miami Beach Police are conducting an internal investigation to figure out what happen between the officers and Hernandez.
