Parents of boy fighting brain-eating amoeba set up fund
LABELLE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The parents of Zachary Reyna, a 12-year-old boy fighting a rare and deadly infection that is attacking his brain are speaking out on social media.
They posted a statement on Facebook Thursday that read in part: "I can't express how much we appreciate all the love and support you all are giving. Your prayers for Zac are being heard. We are still in the storm and it seems to be getting worse."
Experts said the infection is caused by an amoeba found in still, warm water. It traveled up Zachary's nose and into his brain. The seventh grader is currently in the ICU at Miami Children's Hospital.
