Sports-oriented charter school to open
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Crews are getting ready for the opening of a brand new Miami charter school focused strictly on sports-related careers.
Students at SLAM Charter Middle School and High School will learn about athletic training, media and public relations for sports, physical therapy and sports business.
Junior Naomi Camacho said, "I'd like to be in the sports medicine field, so I can be a physical therapist."
Junior Maite Chirino said, "I want a major in sports marketing."
Another student added, "I wanna be a sports anchor, and I think it will help me."
The seven-story, 70,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art school will also cater to those studying sports media relations, agent representation and sports broadcasting. "Our students will not only get the academic experience but a hands-on experience as they go into the world of sports marketing and entertainment," said teacher Alex Tamargo.
The tuition-free public charter school will be located on 12th Avenue, overlooking Marlins Park in Miami, where its students will get to intern with the team's executives.
Sports broadcasting teacher Luis Perez said, "I envy these kids, wish I had a course like this, just one class like this would've been nice."
Math teacher Marisabel Ray said, "They have to incorporate some type of sports content in their everyday lessons."
SLAM, which stands for Sports Leadership and Management is enrolling kids in grades six through 12 with an interest in sports-oriented professions. More than 800 are signed up so far, but Slam has room for just under a 1,000 and though it revolves around sports, one of its biggest backers is famous for his work in another field.
Rapper Pitbull, who has three kids in charter schools, is helping to promote SLAM and charters in general. "I see how much these teachers really care about these kids. I see what these teachers mean to these kids, and I see the change in their life that they make," said Pitbull.
The Sports Leadership and Management Charter School will be opening to students on Aug. 19.
