Police search for men who robbed priests
LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are hoping newly released surveillance video will help them apprehend two men who, they said, robbed two priests outside a South Florida church.
Investigators said the footage shows a sport utility vehicle pulling into the parking lot of St. Helen Catholic Church, located on Northwest 31st Avenue near Oakland Park Boulevard, July 18 around 10 p.m. The driver is then captured turning off the vehicle's headlights. The video then shows two men walking on the sidewalk near the SUV.
Investigators said Father Lesly Jean was taking a visiting priest for a tour of the church at the time of the incident. Deputies said the priests spotted the men but thought nothing of it.
The two subjects are seen walking back and forth several times until they jump the fence and out of the camera's range. Deputies said the two men approached the priests, pointed a gun at them, and stole their money and cell phones.
While the alleged robbery is taking place, the security footage shows the driver, who appears to be a woman, stepping out of the SUV. Just over a minute later, the two suspects are captured jumping back over the fence and running toward the waiting car, which then then speeds off.
Area neighbors were outraged that the priests were targeted in their neighborhood. "Very bad, very bad," said a passersby.
"No good, no good, too much problem," said a man.
"I was shocked [when I heard about it], because people don't usually get robbed, especially priests," said a woman. "They don't usually get robbed because they're very well respected people."
The priests did not suffer any injuries.
