Residents thankful to be alive after building catches fire
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Residents at a South Florida apartment complex are thankful to be alive after their building went up in flames, early Saturday morning.
Smoke soared out of the three-story building at 540 N.W. 7th St. in Miami, just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday.
Residents, some with no clothes on their backs, were quickly evacuated and watched as fire officials put out the flames.
Resident Nancy said, "I grabbed the dog, I ran out, started calling 911, ran upstairs with the dog
trying to get everyone out."
Nancy who lives on the second floor with her son, turtle and dog Marley told 7News the smoke came out of
nowhere. "I smelled smoke. Where is it coming from?" said Nancy. "When I turned around the kitchen was all black and all the smoke was coming through and all the flames were coming through all the holes in the wall."
She said she had an asthma attack and now many of her things are burned beyond recognition, but she is thankful her son, pets and people in this apartment complex are OK. "Fire department saved my turtle, thank you," said Nancy.
Residents at the building said, they credit fast-moving firefighters for knocking down the fast-moving flames so quickly. "The fire department deserves a lot of credit they got here pretty quick. They got here pretty quick so I thank God," resident Peter Ferdinand.
No one was injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
