Students, teachers start first day of school
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Students and faculty are starting off the new school year Monday morning.
Several charter schools are opening for the first time this year, including Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) Charter Middle and High School in Miami. "It's a sport school, it's like sports leadership management, and that's what I want," said eighth grade student Enzo Amarella, 13. "I wanted to, if not be involved in sports, then like broadcasting, and that was the elective I chose. I'm hoping it'll be very exciting."
SLAM is for students in sixth thru 12th grade with an interest in sports-oriented professions. "Every benchmark and every Sunshine State standard and common core standard will be 'slamified,'" said principal Alex Tamargo, "which means we will infuse some type of athletics into the curriculum."
Ricardo Maren is excited about starting his first day at the new school school. "I'm excited because I love sports. I love to do everything," he said.
One of SLAM's biggest backers is Mister 305 himself, rapper Pitbull, whose own kids attend charter schools. "I see how much these teachers really care about these kids, I see what these teachers mean to these kids, and I see the change in their life that they make."
Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho greeted bus drivers early Monday morning and spoke of plans for his district. "We're opening 100 new academic programs, anything from 49 iPrep academies, this is high-technology environment, with very effective teachers and colorful environment," he said. "We have 28 Cambridge programs, the highest level of high school programming. We also have new programs in engineering and iCode academy."
Meanwhile, Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie stopped at Silverlakes Elementary school, one of many schools he plans to visit on Monday. "I will be visiting about seven schools today," he said, "so I'm going to do a tour around the system and check on a few schools and see how they're doing."
So far, things have started off right in Broward County. "We have wonderful programs throughout this entire county," said a board member. "Transportation is rolling out very smoothly this morning, and it's an exciting year."
