Teen faces judge for security guard's murder
SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A teen faced a judge Monday for the fatal shooting death of a South Florida security guard who he and two other accomplices allegedly ambushed while he was on the job.
Miami-Dade Police said it was about 10 p.m. Saturday when Robert Nelson crashed his car into a pillar after having been shot and killed. Inez Thomas, the victim's friend, said Nelson did everything he could to protect the community he once patrolled. "He always parked there and waited until we locked up and reached our car," she said.
It was the 50 State Security guard's job, but it was one he took very seriously. John Williams, president of 50 State Security, said, "It makes it doubly difficult because he was someone who kept everybody kind of loose and laughing and fun, so everybody now is feeling a big void and doing the best we can to try and rally ourselves together."
Nelson died in his security uniform in front of a daycare, on 13815 SW 271st Terrace, Saturday night. "His head was forward in what appeared like somebody shot him," said Thomas, "and it was very sad to see."
Thomas also found Nelson's things strewn across the parking lot. "It appeared to me that they were trying to rob him," said Thomas.
Monday morning, 18-year-old Quintin Vicks faced a judge to face first-degree murder and armed robbery charges. "There is no bond on those two [charges]," a judge told him after reading the charges.
Vicks was already on probation as a convicted criminal. "There are four cases, now, two probation cases and these two cases," noted the judge.
Police found narcotic pills in Vicks' pockets. Two other suspects fled.
Thomas said the absence of Nelson in the community marks a profound loss. "Took away from us someone who was very helpful to the community."
If you have any information on the killing of this security guard and the two other subjects involved, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
