Brakes fail on school bus, no injuries
BOCA RATON, Fla. (WSVN) -- A bus ride home from school for a group of South Florida students quickly turned frightening after the bus' brakes malfunctioned.
"It was a very scary moment. I was so nervous about everything that was going on," said Nadya Williams.
Surveillance taken from inside the school bus shows students panicking as the bus zoomed down a busy road against traffic. "We're going to die," yelled one student.
The teens said they were on their way home from Spanish River High School on Wednesday, when they heard a loud noise and then smelled smoke on the bus. That's when the bus' brakes stopped working. "We're trying to get help, and everyone is honking," said Martha Hopfensperger. "Other cars, everyone is honking and waving at us like we're playing a game."
The bus driver was forced to weave in and out of oncoming traffic. Other students not only feared for their lives but for the lives of those around them. "Oh, I really thought we were going to kill somebody," said Laticia Leon.
Now, parents are worried about the state of these buses that are supposed to transport their children safely to and from school. "I don't know what we're going to do about taking the bus home from now on because if that's the way they're kept, it's a problem," said Richard Leon.
The bus driver was eventually able to bring the out of control 40-foot-long school bus to a halt by rubbing its tires against the curb.
Miraculously, no one was hurt during the wild ride. The girls credit the driver for saving their lives that day. "She was telling us calm down, don't worry," said Hopfensperger. "The fact she did what she did, it's better than I hoped for, and I am happy she did what she did."
The Palm Beach County School District has released this statement: "The bus driver took the proper corrective action in order to bring the bus to a full stop. The brake malfunction is under investigation."
