War veteran's apartment burglarized
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A South Florida family who left their apartment while it was being fumigated came back Thursday to find a ransacked mess.
"I don't even know where to pick up," said Bruce Jones, an Iraq War veteran who left his Little Havana apartment on Tuesday because the building needed to be tented and sprayed for bugs.
"They took my TV off the wall, they took my shoes, stole my children's iPads," he said as he examined the remaining items on his bedroom floor. He said he hadn't even told his three kids about the burglary.
Jones and girlfriend Cindy Reyes live in an apartment complex on Southwest Sixth Street and 16th Avenue. They said about a dozen items were stolen. "One Xbox 360, two Xbox 360 controllers, two Nintendo 3D DS [consoles], one iPad, two pairs of Jordans, one of my daughter's Jordans, so that's three in total, a digital camera, a TracFone and a 42-inch plasma [screen]," said Reyes as she read from a list she wrote down. "And it was all walked out through one of these doors."
Making matters worse, the family's refrigerator was emptied. Jones and Reyes found the contents of their fridge tossed on their kitchen sink and spread over their counter. "All our food is out of the fridge, so everything we had for our children, our milk, whatever, everything is spoiled, everything is gone," said Reyes.
Jones said he doesn't know how much assistance he will receive from the government. "No one has given me a definitive answer as to what's going to happen," he said. "What's the next step, as far as to help the veterans in this building who lost all of their stuff, basically?"
Jones said other units were vandalized as well. He said he is being left to fend for himself and his family. "Honestly, I don't know what we're going to do," he said.
