Local firefighters assist duplex fire victims
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- Several South Florida firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty by spending their free time helping out a homeowner whose property went up in flames.
The fire consumed a Hollywood duplex located off Garfield Street, early Tuesday morning. The homeowner, who asked not to be identified, said he is trying to salvage what he can. "I'm just going to do what I got to do and find some work, and do what I got to do to get back on my feet."
A few days after the blaze, nearly 20 firefighters from Hollywood Fire Rescue came back out to the scene to lend a helping hand. "Incredible, how these guys came in and knocked this out like nothing," said the homeowner.
Firefighter Anthony Vera said the magnitude of the damage compelled him to return to the location of the fire. "Usually, after the fire we leave, but this was so massive that we wanted to come back and help out."
The homeowner said his family has owned their duplex unit for the better part of the last century. He said many items were lost, but he was able to salvage several valuable items that bring back cherished memories. "I did get a lot of pictures, my son's awards, a bunch of his academic awards and stuff," he said.
Vera said his job extends far beyond fighting the flames. "When we put the uniform on, we're helping the community when we're on duty," he said. "When we're off duty, this is love of the community. This is because we want to [help]. A lot of these guys just got off a busy shift, and they're here helping out. "
Hollywood Fire Rescue has deemed the building unsafe to live in. The cause of the fire remains under investigation . Fire rescue officials said it looks suspicious.
