Victim of date night robbery shares ordeal
DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A nightclub outing led to a violent outcome for South Florida man who was beaten, tied up and robbed inside his own apartment.
Fifty-five-year-old Eilan Taregan said he invited a woman in her twenties back to his fifth-floor Dania Beach apartment, located on the 4100 block of Stirling Road, after meeting her at Scarlett's Cabaret in Pembroke Park on July 21. "We were drinking beer and having a good time," said Taregan.
Broward Sheriff's Office detectives released surveillance footage from the gentlemen's club that shows the woman who asked to go home with him. Taregan said she told him that two male friends would drop her off. Police said the trio drove back to Taregan's apartment in her black, late model Toyota Camry later that night.
Once at his apartment, Taregan, believing the woman's male companions had left, started drinking with her. Shortly thereafter, she gave the cue for the attack to begin when she went outside to smoke a cigarette. "I saw she went outside with the cigarette, and she left the door open," he said. "So I go back to close the door and these men, both of them jump on me."
Taregan said the men barged in and punched and kicked him until he fell to the ground. "[They] tied my legs with my belt and my hands with the [rope] of the bolo pants," he said. "All the night, they screamed, 'We're going to kill you! Where is the money? Where did you put your jewelry? If you're not going to tell you, we're going to kill you.'"
While the men tied up Taregan, the woman ransacked the apartment. The perpetrators left Taregan in his bathroom while they stole thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry. Police said they also took his wallet and his cell phone.
BSO detectives said the woman and her male accomplices tried to use Taregan's credit card at a nearby gas station. Back at his apartment, Taregan was able to free his legs "I cannot open my hands; [the rope] was too tight," said Taregan. "I opened my belt [and] I go to my car." He drove with his hands still tied up to the nearby Mozart Cafe and called for help.
Taregan said he desperately wants the woman and his two attackers caught, and hopes someone sees the clear surveillance video and recognizes them. He added that, while frightened, he still considers himself fortunate that he escaped with his life. "Those kind of people, they don't care," he said. "They'll kill you like you're nothing."
