Driver arrested, motorcyclist injured after wild police chase
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A man who was allegedly driving a stolen sport utility vehicle led police on a chase on a major South Florida highway Friday morning before getting arrested.
Authorities said Thomas Harry Eagan took off during a traffic stop just after 5 a.m. and headed east on the Palmetto Expressway. "We have a vehicle [heading] eastbound on the 826 and 27 Avenue," said one of the officers giving pursuit on police radio.
Miami Gardens Police officers pursued the white Jeep Cherokee and realized the tag on the vehicle was stolen. "It was a stolen tag, and the officer was attempting to stop him and he tried to run over the officer," said an officer on police radio.
The motorist then jumped onto Interstate 95. "Right now southbound I-95 passing 125th Street," said a pursuing officer.
A woman said she saw Eagan's SUV weave through traffic. ""I'm already doing 60 miles an hour, and I don't know how fast these officers are going," she said. "They could hit a tire on the road and lose control and swerve into somebody else."
One of the officers chasing after the subject said Eagan almost collided with him. "He almost crashed into me; have the units behind me slow down," the officer advised.
Police said the Jeep at some point turned northbound on I-95's southbound express lanes. "Do not chase the wrong direction," an officer instructed to the other cruisers. "Have units at the off ramps to try and catch him where he goes the wrong way."
A motorcyclist heading south on the express lanes was thrown off his bike while trying to avoid hitting the driver's jeep. The rider crashed in the express lanes of I-95 and Northeast 125th Street. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The chase came to an end in a neighborhood at Northwest 135th Street and 12th Avenue. Police said they were forced to use a Taser to arrest Eagan.
Paramedics transported the subject to JMH. His condition is unknown at this time.
Among the charges Eagan is facing are fleeing police, battery on an officer and drug possession.
