Man arrested after stealing police cruiser
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man has been arrested and charged with third degree grand theft after he allegedly jumped into a North Miami Beach Police cruiser and took it for a joyride, Sunday afternoon.
Police said the marked police vehicle was parked on the south side of the North Miami Beach Police Station when the man entered the vehicle, which may have been unlocked and located the car keys inside. The man then drove off with the police cruiser.
A short time later, officers noticed the vehicle traveling northbound along West Dixie Highway and Northeast 172nd Street. Police pulled up in front of the vehicle. The man then rolled down the window and said, "I just wanted to drive for a little bit," according to police reports.
Witnesses who saw the man driving the cruiser were shocked to find out the man driving was not a police officer. "It was not an officer. It was someone who stole a police car. It's crazy," said witness Liz Salcedo.
Police identified the man as 28-year-old Stalyn Enriquez Hernandez. He was immediately taken into custody and charged with third degree grand theft.
North Miami Beach Police are conducting an internal investigation.
