Gloria Estefan brings her style to classic standards
MIAMI (WSVN) -- South Florida's first lady of music is getting ready to release her next album.
Gloria Estefan is known globally, and her new release, The Standards, is setting new standards in the music world.
Estefan's new album is a new look in her career and will focus on her unique take on some of music's greatest songs ever written, sung and recorded. She considers this album one of the most important and personal albums she has ever created. "I actually produced this album," Estefan said. "This is my baby, top to bottom."
Estefan will launch the album later in September, two years in the making. Inspiration came from an impromptu performance at a University of Miami Alumni party when Musical Director and Dean of the Frost School of Music, Shelly Berg, invited Estefan to sing a song with him at the piano. "I sat in with him at the piano, and we did 'Good Morning Heartache,' and I go, 'Dammit, Shelly, I want to do a record.'"
Estefan spoke to the media after her press conference earlier Tuesday. "I just feel so lucky that we were able to really create something that went far beyond my mind's eye," Estefan said.
Estefan recorded the album live in the studio with an orchestra last December after cutting down her list of 50 songs to just a dozen. "It's great music; it's always going to be great music," Estefan said. "I love the fact that my daughter's friends and even the 14-year-olds in her band loved the record."
Though the songs have been heard before, Estefan found a way to make them her own. Estefan said the music has always been a part of her life. "The fact that I was able to write those songs, this is the inception of that feeling," Estefan said. "These songs that I used to do with my dad, play for him on my guitar, these songs that I grew up with, that's where my ballad side came from. This is deep in my core. That's who I am. That's what I love to do."
The Standards comes out Sept. 10. Fans will be able to download it on iTunes. There is a special CD on sale at all Targets that will contain bonus tracks. Estefan also recorded songs in Spanish, Italian and French.
