Police officer rescues passenger from burning car
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Miami Beach Police officer is speaking to just one station after tending to injured passengers who were involved in a multi-car crash.
Miami Beach Police Officer Earl Hackworth said he was on his way to work Sunday night when he saw the accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, near 103rd Street. "I see a vehicle on fire on the highway," he said. "As I approach, I see a young lady laying in the street, so I positioned my vehicle to block traffic. At that point, I call it out on the radio."
Surveillance cameras show Hackworth on the scene and fire rescue tending to some of the victims. Investigators said a vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier. "The impact caused two of the four passengers to be ejected out of the vehicle," said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Sanchez. "The vehicle spun out of control, crashing into another vehicle traveling southbound."
The car then burst into flames. "On the floor, there was hot oil, metal, parts like that; the vehicle is still on fire," said Hackworth, "so I pull her to safety, and then I re-assess all the patients one more time."
Rescue crews transported the victims to Jackson Memorial Hospital where their conditions are reportedly improving. "My brother, they just took a thing out of him, and now he's breathing on his own; he's talking. He wasn't able to do that," said Shay Robinson. "My sister, she's talking. The other girl, she's up and talking and my cousin, he's resting."
Hackworth said his act of protecting and serving is just part of helping someone in need. He said he would love to meet the victims he assisted after the crash. "Seeing them laying there in such need, I would like to just get some closure," Hackworth said.
The cause of the crash is being investigated. Preliminary investigation reveals that speed may have played a role in the accident.
