Children found living in deplorable conditions, mother arrested
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a mother and charged her with child neglect after her kids were found home alone in a house described as filthy.
According to police, a Department of Children and Families employee was driving by the 1800 block of Northwest 46th Street in Miami when they discovered two girls playing in the middle of the street all by themselves.
The kids, who were playing outside at the time, according to officials, were living in deplorable conditions. Police said 24-year-old Naquisha Thomas was supposed to be watching her 1-year-old daughter and another child but left them both alone at the home. "What we do know is that DCF drove by and saw both children in the street, which is not acceptable," said Miami Police spokesperson Rene Pimentel.
Police then arrested Thomas when she returned home and charged her with child neglect.
Thomas' front yard is filled with trash, dirty toys and even a BBQ smoker. Neighbor Jessica said the home has always been filthy. "Have a bunch of debris, dirt, bikes, there's aluminum. We put this green fence up because it's not good to the eye to see."
The children's grandfather said someone else might be to blame. "She said she left her kids with someone who was supposed to be taking care of them until she gets back, so I'm surprised there was no one here," said Anthony Taylor.
According to neighbors, this is not the first time the children have been left home alone. "This has happened before, like last year, and it was a big thing, so we are surprised this is going on again," said neighbor Ms. Lee, "and you should know better from the first time."
Thomas' two other children, who were in school at the time, have also been turned over to DCF. Two dogs were also taken by Miami-Dade County Animal Services.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon to figure out who will have custody of Thomas' children.
