Police find body while searching for missing teen in Everglades
EVERGLADES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have found the body of an adult male near the place where an 18-year-old man is believed to have gone missing.
Authorities made the discovery at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in a canal. The body has since been taken to the Medical Examiner's Office, where an autopsy is pending.
Earlier that day, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found 18-year-old Jesus Trejo's blue Honda Civic in the area of Ingraham Highway and 232nd Avenue in South Miami-Dade.
Trejo was last seen by his family at around 9 a.m., Tuesday morning. Trejo failed to appear in school, a local mechanic institute, earlier Wednesday. Trejo's family searched for him and found his car Wednesday morning. The family began to search the area on their own and when their searched yielded no results, they notified authorities, and the search continued.
Miami-Dade Police also assisted in the search, using bloodhounds. They have also fingerprinted the car for clues.
"He just told us that he was going to meet somebody out here. I don't know for what," Angie Rodriguez, Trejo's aunt said. "We haven't seen him since. We got worried like around 12 o'clock. We haven't heard from him, and then today we started calling everybody, and we still haven't heard from him."
"We have several officers from the FWC that are assisting in the search," Jorge Pino, of the FWC, said. "They're doing a building search about a mile behind us. There's several buildings, so they're doing building searches to make sure that the guy didn't fall asleep in there or who knows? He may be in there, so we're doing a search of every building, one by one, to make sure that we eliminate that as a factor."
Police have said they do not believe this is a case of foul play. The keys were not in the car, and police have not been able to find footprints from the scene as well.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the body of the adult male that was found in a nearby canal is in fact Trejo's body.
Police continue to investigate.
