Teen flees police, rolls over SUV after panicking
NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A driver, who police described as a juvenile, suffered only minor injuries after leading police on a chase and crashing his vehicle.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which happened at 195th Street and Ives Dairy Road, Friday afternoon. The chase began as a Miami-Dade Police K-9 officer responded to a burglary call. The sport utility vehicle sped away from the officer's cruiser, which had its lights and sirens on.
As the SUV fled at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour, according to witnesses, it struck at least four cars before it rolled over at 199th St. "After hitting our car, he flipped," said Ronald Polisme, "and after he flipped, he hit that car and then another car."
None of the drivers of the other cars were injured.
The driver wound up trapped. As he tried to get out, the police officer caught up to him. Mary Rolandini was in another car hit by suspect. "I saw the minor on the floor. He was trying to run from the police officer, and the police officer caught him."
The juvenile, who is under the age of 18, only suffered minor injuries.
It turned out, police said, he was driving without a license, and he panicked after seeing the police cruiser. He was treated for his injuries on the scene.
The K-9 officer was responding to a burglary at 195th Street and California Club Drive where officers had been checking backyards for the alleged burglar. Police even escorted children arriving home from school to their homes, during the burglary investigation.
Meanwhile, the damaged SUV has since been removed from the crash scene. However, three other cars got into an accident after someone became distracted by all the police and media activity.
