1 dead, 2 injured in multi-vehicle crash
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Investigators are trying to determine whether a deadly crash involving two cars and a transit bus on Saturday was the result of street racing.
The mangled wreckage of two cars and shattered glass from a Miami-Dade Metro Transit bus littered the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 17th Avenue as police sorted through the debris.
"A Mercedes that was possibly traveling eastbound on 36th Street collided with a Nissan Maxima," said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll. "That impact was so severe that it threw one of the vehicles into the bus, causing the driver of the Nissan to be ejected."
Police said the impact was so intense that the man driving the golden Nissan Maxima died on the scene. The woman sitting on the passenger seat inside the green Mercedes Benz had to be extricated by Miami Fire Rescue.
Authorities said the passenger and driver in the Mercedes were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in serious condition. They said no one inside the transit bus was seriously injured.
Witness Prince Nairn described the collision, which police said, happened Saturday around 7 a.m. "The bus stopped at the light; the green car was parked next to the bus," he said. "The [Nissan] comes barreling down, and the light turned green. He couldn't stop; he kept going. He hit the green car, and the green car spun in front of the bus."
Nairn said one of the cars was speeding at the moment of impact. "It's terrible; it's a terrible thing," he said.
"At this moment, if it was a drag race, it's unknown," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Robin Pinkard. "Our traffic homicide [division] is investigating that part of the accident.
As twisted metal and debris lay on the street, police said, they are looking into what caused the deadly collision. Investigators said they will obtain surveillance video from the bus and the red-light cameras located at the intersection.
