Jury selection begins for FIU student murder trial
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Jury selection began earlier Monday in the trial of a Florida International University student charged with killing a football player.
Quentin Wyche stands charged with second degree murder. Prosecutors said he stabbed former Panthers running back Kendall Berry to death during an on-campus brawl in March of 2010.
Police said tensions between the two men arose March 25 after Wyche was seen arguing with Berry's girlfriend. According to witness accounts, Berry and several football players confronted Wyche outside a recreation center. Witnesses said Wyche broke away and Berry chased after him. A witness for the prosecution, an FIU student at the time of the incident, told police she saw Wyche take out a pair of scissors from his backpack.
Wyche's attorney is arguing his client was acting in self-defense. The trial is expected to last the rest of the week.
