Police: tourist raped, robbed at SoBe hotel
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Miami Beach Police have released surveillance video of a man accused of sexually assaulting and then robbing a woman inside a South Beach hotel last week.
Police said the assault happened in the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 6, at the Breakwater Hotel just off Ocean Drive and Ninth Street. "A tourist from Switzerland had gotten into the elevator. The subject got into the elevator with the victim and said, 'Oh, I'm going to the same floor you're going to,'" said Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez. "They got off on the victim's floor, he overpowered her, took her to her room, sexually assaulted her and he robbed her of money. He then fled the scene."
Authorities said the subject is described as a black male in his 20s, standing approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 230 pounds. Also, the subject has a cursive letter tattoo on his upper left chest. "If you know who this person is, do the right thing and turn him in," said Hernandez. "We have pretty good pictures of the subject, so we're hoping someone is going to come forward with information that will help us crack this case."
Police think this man may know the hotel well and may have visited it in the past. "It seemed, from the surveillance video, that he's very familiar with the inner workings of the hotel," Hernandez said, "so we're hoping that somebody there recognizes him not only from the flyers that we are passing out in the area, maybe he works in the area, maybe he frequents establishments in the area, so that we can identify him, locate him and put him in jail."
Police saturated the area of the weekend hoping to catch the subject. But now they hope the image will help them catch their man. "We will locate him once this picture gets out there," Hernandez noted.
If you have any information on this brutal assault, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
