Deputy remains in critical condition after I-95 crash
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy continues to fight for his life Thursday after he crashed his cruiser into a tree on Interstate 95.
The accident happened around 6:17 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of I-95 just before Atlantic Boulevard. BSO said 32-year-old Deputy Daniel Rivera was on his way to work when he somehow lost control of his cruiser. "His vehicle did leave the roadway, it contacted a tree on the passenger side and there was not only significant damage to the vehicle but horrific damage to the deputy and we pray for him," said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.
One man who was working inside his business, which was just feet from the crash, heard the impact. "I just heard a big, loud boom," said Roger Hrenyo.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue rushed the 10-year veteran to Broward Health North in critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery. Rivera remains in critical condition.
Israel said BSO continues to pray for Rivera and hopes he survives the violent wreck.
The crash remains under investigation.
