Family of slain woman ask gunman to surrender
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The family of a South Florida woman who was shot and killed in front of her home Wednesday are asking the person or people responsible for the shooting to surrender to authorities.
Police said 22-year-old Kimone Mattis was pulling up on the driveway of her residence on the 2900 block of Northwest 24th Street just before midnight. Investigators said the victim did not get a chance to exit her car when a gunman sprayed the vehicle with bullets. She was rushed to North Broward Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
"This is a very, very tough time," said Paula Walker, the victim's mother.
Mattis was the mother of a child who turned 1 year old in June. "She can't have a dream and scream for Mommy, cause Mommy can't come because somebody decided to take her life," said Jennifer Beckford, a friend of the victim.
Relatives said she was on her way home from work at a local restaurant when she was shot.
Mattis' grandmother said no one in her family has any idea who would want to kill her granddaughter. "They killed my granddaughter for no reason," said Veleta Mattis. "Whosoever killed my granddaughter, Kimone, please come forward."
Family friend Nancy Desire, the godmother of Mattis' daughter, lamented the untimely passing of someone who had so much to live for. "She's [a] very young, attractive, intelligent person," she said. "She didn't have to go this way."
The victim's mother addressed the alleged shooter directly as she struggled to come to terms with the magnitude of the loss. "How could you do this to my child? What kind of heart do you have to kill a person? Just come forward, turn yourself in," said Walker.
If you have any information on this shooting death, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.
