Police arrest gunman in deadly supermarket shooting
OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities have arrested a teenager accused of murdering an elderly man during an attempted robbery in the parking lot of a local supermarket.
Miami-Dade Police arrested 17-year-old Jamal Jackson and charged him with first degree murder, Thursday.
The victim's wife, who recently heard about the arrest said, "I believe in God, and I asked for his help, and he listened to me," said Aida Pilotos while fighting back tears.
Investigators said Jackson allegedly shot and killed 71-year-old Miguel Pilotos near the Top Value supermarket on 139th Street and Northwest 27th Avenue in Opa-Locka on Aug. 21 Surveillance video shows a man riding a bicycle, then circling back and following the victim to his sport utility vehicle. The man on the bicycle is then captured shooting Pilotos and riding off.
"I can't anymore," Pilotos said, finding it difficult to put pain into words.
According to police, the man in the video is Jackson. They believe he fired a single shot to Pilotos' head in an attempt to rob him.
Pilotos later died from his wound.
Reflecting on her husband's fate, Aida said, "He went to get groceries and then returned to get a lotto ticket because he hoped to one day win."
She said she one day hopes to get answers as to why the gunman killed her husband. "I asked the detective to let me speak with him. I wanted to ask him, 'Why?'"
Jackson's mother and sister were in juvenile court Friday, but Jackson waived his right to appear as the state asked that the case go before a grand jury seeking first-degree murder charges. "If they charged him with first-degree murder, he will be tried as an adult," Defense attorney Rod Vereen said.
"If that is in fact him in the video tape, then there has to be some mental issues here," Vareen said.
Sources told 7News that Jackson has several burglary arrests, cocaine possession and battery charges on his record. "He can be sentenced to life in prison if convicted," Vereen said.
"I hope he get what he deserves," Aida said. She went on to say that she hopes to one day speak with Jackson and ask him why.
