Port security officer arrested for allegedly stealing iPad
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Officials have arrested a maritime security officer accused of stealing electronic devices from passengers' luggage and putting them up for sale.
Police arrested PortMiami security officer Jean Thomas after surveillance video from February showed him putting an iPad from a passenger's luggage into his pants and underneath his shirt. He then places the bag back onto the screening belt area.
According to the arrest affidavit, on Sept. 2, the victim told Carnival Victory security that her iPad was missing from the case inside her luggage.
Investigators then found Craigslist entries for two iPads, including one for Perez's iPad. During a conversation on Sept. 10, Thomas told an undercover officer that he had sold an iPad and was selling another one for $450.
The next day, Thomas and his co-worker, Sherece Nelson, met the undercover officer at a local fast food joint to complete the purchase. Both were arrested.
Police also found an iPod Touch in Nelson's car that had been reported stolen on Feb. 18 at PortMiami.
Thomas has been charged with two counts of third degree grand theft, dealing in stolen property and driving with a suspended license. Nelson is charged with dealing in stolen property.
Police continue to investigate.
