Toddler falls from motel window, parents arrested
HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida couple sits behind bars Saturday after their 2-year-old son fell from a second story window at the motel where they were staying.
Police and fire rescue units responded to the scene just before midnight Friday at El Paraiso Motel, located on 1615 W. Okeechobee Rd., where 26-year-old Luis Enrique Rodriguez and 28-year-old Jacqueline Sanchez had been checked in for the past two days with the victim and his 5-month-old brother.
Paramedics rushed the injured child to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Detectives at the scene found evidence of cocaine and alcoholic beverages in the family's motel room. Rodriguez and Sanchez have been charged with one count each of child abuse without great bodily harm, a third degree felony, for the presence of narcotics in close proximity to the children.
The investigation of the toddler's fall and injury is open and ongoing, as detectives continue to monitor the victim's condition. Agents with the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of the couple's 5-month-old child.
