AC units stolen at 2 local businesses
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Students and employees at a South Florida daycare are feeling the heat after their AC units were stolen over the weekend.
Juanita Walker is the owner of Sheyes of Miami Learning Center. She said this is not the first time thieves targeted her daycare. "We get here this morning to open, and everything is gone. Both units are gone. The coverings for the AC units are open," said Walker.
Walker said the business has been hit three times in the last eight months. "The third time we've had it, in the last eight, nine months that we've had thefts here, and it's unbelievable," said Walker.
The staff had to call parents because they said it was about 85 degrees inside the daycare. "It's hard on the parents. It's not only affecting the children, it affects the parents because, like she said, they have to go to work," said daycare director Theila Jackson.
"They are hot. They're starting to whine and cry," said Jackson.
The second business reportedly targeted over the weekend was Girl Power, located at 6015 N.W. 7 Ave. in Miami. CEO of Girl Power Thema Campbell said her business was targeted about six months ago. "They stole our AC from our locked cage. They went also on top of the roof and pulled out copper wire," said Campbell.
Business owners said it's time to put a stop to these crimes. "We got to get more police out here to help us out and do what we got to do," said Walker. "I did this to bring about awareness and help. If I can get help to replace my unit, I need it. I don't know where else I'm gonna turn."
Walker said she has surveillance cameras around the daycare and will go through the video to see if she can spot the thief.
If you have any information on these thefts, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
