Man surrenders after barricading himself inside home
SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A SWAT special response unit took a South Florida man into custody Wednesday after he barricaded himself inside a home following an altercation during which, investigators said, he threatened a neighbor with a gun.
Authorities said the subject holed himself up inside a residence on the 8500 block of 21st Court in Sunrise at around 2:30 p.m. when he saw police approaching the house. The man refused to take phone calls from negotiators. SWAT officers then used a pole attached to the front of their truck to take out the home's front window.
The special response team surrounded the home and closed off the area. The subject then began throwing objects through another window. Moments later, he threw a handgun, which officers retrieved using a robot. The man later came outside and threw a glass bottle at officers before running back indoors.
SWAT officers used their truck to knock down the fence alongside the property and threw tear gas inside the house. The subjected emerged from the home one last time, and he was tackled by authorities.
Investigators said the woman threatened by the subject never actually saw the gun during their argument.
