Fans wait hours for release of new iPhone
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Apple's newest iPhone has been released and South Florida fans spent hours lining up to be the first owners.
The new iPhone 5s and the plastic version 5c are on store shelves throughout the US. Both phones made their debut Friday morning and went on sale at 8 a.m.
One customer who waited in line for 16 hours at the Apple Store on Lincoln Road for an iPhone 5s was a bit disappointed with the one she received. "I got it in silver, but the only reason I waited here all night is because I wanted it in gold," she said. "I was really disappointed, but they said I could exchange it for the gold one if they have it within 30 days."
Within a few minutes of the store opening, the silver and gold iPhone 5s models were sold out. The iPhone 5c was still available in a variety of colors.
Die-hard fans had been lined up outside the Apple store on Lincoln Road as early as Thursday morning. Lloyd Pearson, the first customer in line for the release, said he had made plans to stay in line for the long run. "It's a really big deal," he said.
"I don't know if you saw the news; I think, like, in Japan they're withstanding typhoons," Pearson said. "So I figured, if they can withstand typhoons, I think I can make it. I'm gonna try and make it through this. Lord, give me strength."
Pearson arrived at 4 a.m. Thursday morning, and as time passed by, friends were made and stories were told. "Just like Las Vegas," Marie Dallas said, as she described the craziness that followed. "Maybe fights."
Dallas passed the time reading a book before she got her hands on her choice of phone, the 5s. "The S version is not plastic, it's a better quality," Dallas said. "I'm excited about that."
Other South Florida stores are stocking up on the new merchandise. AT&T spokesperson Kelly Starling wasn't too sure how large the crowd will get. "I don't know what kind of crowd we're gonna have," Starling said. "There usually is still lines, and that's because I think iPhone people like getting in lines."
The specs in the 5s boast big speed gains with an A7 processor. Also, fingerprints and scanning technology will help keep the phone locked safe. "The fingerprint scanning, I hate putting passcodes on my phone, so I'm looking forward to it," Pearson said.
The iPhones 5c, built to attract a wider audience for Apple, costs $99. The back panel is plastic and comes in a variety of colors.
