Woman delivers baby in car after crash
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (WSVN) -- A South Florida woman gave birth to one of her twins inside her car after getting into an accident while driving herself to the hospital, Friday morning.
According to police, Jessica Stanley had gone into labor around 6 a.m. and was driving herself to the hospital, when she got into a car accident near Southwest 152nd Street and 102nd Avenue in Southwest Miami-Dade.
When fire rescue arrived to the scene, Stanley had already given birth to one of the twins, thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan. "I swept his mouth, and then he started crying," said Betty Hornes. "I said, 'Cry, baby, cry.'"
The 63-year-old is a gastrointestinal technician at Baptist Hospital in Miami. She was on her way to work when she witnessed the accident. "I said, 'Oh, my God, an accident right in front of my eyes.' When I went to the car, the lady was laying back. Her legs were open, and I happen to look down between her leg, and the baby's head was right there at the cervix."
Hornes said she knew what she had to do. "She was in the passenger side, in the front, and I took the baby. I went underneath his head and slowly pulled him out. Slowly and gently."
While one baby was out, another still had to be delivered. Hornes said, "I told the mother, 'Listen, your baby's doing fine, but we need you to relax and take some slow breaths and don't push."
Hornes said she held the baby until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived. They took her to Jackson South Community Hospital where the second baby was born.
It was her first time delivering a baby. She said she wasn't nervous about the experience, noting God put her there for a reason. "I don't feel like I'm a hero," she said. "I think God put us on earth for a reason."
Hornes also noted she is one of 10 children who has seen some of her siblings being born.
The parents were not available for comment, but the hospital said mother and babies are all doing fine. Hornes said she cannot wait to meet them.
