Man arrested in connection to deadly hit-and-run
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A man who, police said, fled the scene of an accident that left a passenger dead and a driver seriously injured was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.
At his bond hearing Monday, 38-year-old old Derrick Brown was also charged with leaving the scene of a crash with a death, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, aggravated feeling and eluding with death or injury. He is also wanted in Georgia for allegedly trafficking narcotics.
Police said they became suspicious of Brown when they were patrolling an area in Miami on Sept. 16. They said Brown took off when they approached him, triggering a chase. According to the arrest form, Brown ran a stop sign on Southwest 176th Street and 105th Street in Southwest Miami-Dade, slamming into a 2006 Ford Taurus on the passenger's side.
Brown and an unknown passenger fled from the scene on foot. Responding police officers established a perimeter, but the subjects were not located.
The passenger of the Taurus, 55-year-old Monica Patterson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
According to detectives, a witness provided a sworn statement indicating Brown had confessed to the collision in text messages and a voicemail. Investigators added Brown made several recorded phone calls to Gwinnett County Jail in Georgia in which he admitted driving his vehicle at the time of the crash and fleeing the scene.
He was denied bond.
