Man with pickax injured after police-involved shooting
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man has been hospitalized after a police-involved shooting after officers responded to a home invasion call Monday night.
Police received a call regarding a man wielding a pickax, later identified as 41-year-old Jason O'Brien, trying to break into a house, located in the area of 42nd Avenue and 10th Street, just before 9:30 p.m. Monday. Neighbors said that man is the property owner of the house and lives in a small home behind it.
Outside the home, a sport utility vehicle sat with all its windows shattered. The home's front door and lock were damaged, and there was a mess of shattered glass left on the back porch from a broken window. There was also dents in another door. He actually made it inside the home where a family of five, including two children, lives.
The family fled in a car and called 911 after they made it away. When a Miami-Dade Police officer arrived on the scene, he was confronted by the man. After refusing multiple commands to drop the pickax, the officer was forced to fire on the subject.
Henry Guerra, a neighbor, heard the shots. He said it sounded "like fireworks, like six firecrackers."
Guerra said police did not take any chances when they responded. "It was crazy," he noted, "immediately, the helicopters, fire rescue, 50 police officers, not something you see around here."
The subject was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Tuesday afternoon, his condition was still serious but stable.
They family was not harmed. They did not say much as they left the home. "I don't care how he's doing," said a female resident. "He almost killed me. We ran."
"They were scared," noted Guerra before repeating, "They were scared."
The officer was not injured during the confrontation.
Police have not determined a motive for the pickax attack, but they continue to investigate. O'Brien so far faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and armed burglary.
