Deputy back on the job after injury
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A BSO deputy is back on the job just days after being injured trying to stop a burglary suspect.
Deputy Jeff Hurt is grateful to be alive. A week ago, Thursday, two deputies, including Hurt, faced a suspect who used his car as a weapon. "I sustained this bruise probably as a result of the seat belt," Hurt said as he described his scars from that afternoon. "I just really didn't think he would run into me."
Thirty-four-year-old Joshua Boyce crashed his Honda Civic into the deputy's cruiser. "He never hit the brakes. He never slowed. He never veered," Hurt said.
Police said Boyce started his crime spree when he attempted to burglarize a nearby home. "I saw the back end of a foot," said the homeowner, Mia Nistico. "I called the 911. I said, 'There's someone in here. There's somebody in the house right now.'"
Deputy Mike Gardner first responded to the call but was run over, police said, as Boyce tried to flee. A chase ensued down A1A. "But I knew if he got past us and hit that intersection, there would've been a number of people dead. We had to stop this guy, and before I knew it, he just kept his fast rate of speed. He made a straight B-line for me, I budged up a little bit and before I knew it, he hit the right rear passenger door of my unit and spun me around."
Hurt's cruiser was left banged up, he was injured and so was Boyce, who didn't give up right away, though he was surrounded. "They had him at gunpoint, they kept ordering him 'Out of the car! Out of the car!' At this point I was out of wind. I had the wind knocked out of me."
Boyce then laid on the ground and began crawling before being arrested. He is now on crutches.
Hurt feels very lucky after what took place and said a little divine intervention was on his side that day. "I had my medals on that day," Hurt said as he held up his necklace. "Saint Christopher, but I'm also glad nobody else got injured."
Boyce received a no-bond hold and is being held in the Broward County Jail.
When Hurt was asked what was going through his mind during the ordeal when his cruiser was hit, he had a few choice words he couldn't repeat on TV.
Hurt suffered no broken bones. Gardner did break a few bones, but both deputies are expected to make a full recovery.
