2 elderly women conned in Lotto scam
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Two South Florida senior citizens were conned into giving more than $10,000 each to scam artists who claimed to have a winning lottery ticket and were caught on camera interacting with the victims, investigators said.
Police said one of the victims, an 83-year-old woman, was approached Wednesday morning by a woman wearing a green shirt at the Sedano's Supermarket located inside the shopping plaza at 10345 Pines Boulevard. After the subject told the elderly woman she was undocumented and had a winning Lotto ticket she couldn't cash, authorities said the victim offered to help her.
According to investigators, surveillance pictures show the woman in the green shirt and the senior citizen inside a bank. Aided by an accomplice, the subject would later con the 83-year-old out of $18,000 in cash, merchandise and jewelry, police said.
"Oh, my God, that's unbelievable," said Aida Brar, a shopper at the Pembroke Pines plaza where the con job took place.
The incident occurred one month after, according to Hallandale Police, a couple claiming to have a $2 million lottery ticket tricked a 71-year-old woman into giving them $11,700 at the Bealls department store located at 917 E Hallandale Beach Boulevard, about 12 miles from Pines Boulevard plaza. Similarly, the suspects told the victim they could not cash the ticket because they were immigrants.
In recently-released surveillance video, the suspects are seen walking into the department store and then leaving with the victim a few minutes later. Police said they took the cash from the woman and promised to give her $80,000 but disappeared.
"I can't even fathom how people can be doing that, especially to the elderly," said Brar. [These are] people that we need to be taking care of, not taking advantage of."
