Pit bull alerts family about house fire
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The owners of a dog declared their pet a hero after he alerted them about a fire that had engulfed their home in flames.
The 9-month-old canine's barks warned the Tallahassee family about the blaze, which took place Thursday. Officials said the dog sustained severe burns all over his body.
"If we didn't hear him, we wouldn't have gotten up, and we would've been the ones in the hospital or dead," said Sierra Plair, one of the pit bull's owners.
A family member ran outside after hearing the dog's yelps to find the animal on fire. The owner quickly doused the pit bull with water while his fiancee ran upstairs to grab their children. The family escaped unharmed.
Firefighters said they believe the cause of the blaze was arson, a possibility Plair finds disturbing. "Honestly, the person who did this to my home don't want to know how I feel because I feel like someone tried to kill me and my family," she said. "They harmed my dog."
The pit bull is expected to make a full recovery.
