Elderly So. Fla. man killed in Lake Okeechobee plane crash
MARGATE, Fla. (WSVN) -- The 69-year-old man killed when his small plane crashed into Lake Okeechobee Saturday was a South Florida resident, officials said.
Palm Beach Sheriff's Office deputies said divers found Margate resident Bruce Lowerre's body strapped in the seat of the Model S-12E kit plane. Officials said first responders rushed to the scene of the crash just after 8 a.m. after reports of a possible boating accident about two miles offshore, finding the wreckage of Lowerre's experimental aircraft instead.
"A helicopter responded and discovered the wreckage was an aircraft," said PBSO spokesperson Teri Barbera. "The aircraft was discovered upside down."
Lowerre's body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The Federal Aviation Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating how the crash happened.
The victim's family was not available for comment.
