Memorial service held for drowned teen
DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A service was held Sunday to honor a South Florida teen who drowned on Memorial Day at John U. Lloyd State Park.
Rescue crews rushing to save 15-year-old Jamal Clark after he slipped under the surface, but it was too late. Several representatives from the lifesaving community attended the event to bring awareness to parks that do not have lifeguards.
"This particular beach is of interest to us because it's really the only beach that does not have lifeguards and 500,000 people come to this beach every year," said FIU Coastal Research Professor John R. Fletemeyer. "All the neighboring beaches have lifeguards and we hope that through this memorial, and through a very proactive way, we can encourage them to re-establish lifeguards and make this a safer beach."
Jamal was caught in a rip current while swimming.
