Commissioners honor officers for their heroism
MIAMI (WSVN) -- Several South Florida officers and first responders were honored after proving they are the best at protecting and serving the community.
From placing themselves in danger, to taking down dangers to the community, these brave officers say they were just doing their job. Miami-Dade County publicly recognized their contributions, Tuesday afternoon. "This was just another day that I put on the uniform, and I was doing what I've been trained to do, and what I signed up to do," said Miami-Dade Police Officer Jonathan I. Dweck.
Humble words from a proud police officer as South Florida thanks him for his heroism. Miami-Dade commissioners honored Officer Dweck for going beyond the call of duty.
A double murder suspect led police on a desperate and deadly high-speed chase. Maritza Medina, a 48-year-old mother of two was on her way home when her car was struck at more than 100 miles per hour.
Without regard for his own safety, Officer Dweck put himself between Medina and the suspect protecting her and performing CPR, but tragically, Medina would not survive. "That day, I saw the victim lying there, and I knew immediately I had to give her a chance at life," said Dweck. "So I just did what I'm trained to do, and I reacted like a lot of officers do every single day."
Officer Dweck was not the only first responder that was recognized. Members of the Hialeah Police Department received awards for their role in stopping a mass killer.
Flashbangs and gunshots echoed through a Hialeah apartment complex back in July after a man opened fire, killing six innocent people. "But it could have been worse had it not been for these guys behind us," said Hialeah Police Detective Carl Zogby. "Once we arrived on the scene that evening, the bad guy had no choice but to start trying to save his own life. He was too occupied doing that to try to kill any other innocent people, and that's their job."
The Hialeah SWAT team was also credited with saving the lives of two hostages.
